Description

Named for the Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, this galactic chain is an iconic part of the Virgo Cluster of at least 1,300 and possibly as many as 2,000 galaxies, most of them faint dwarf ellipticals, centered about 58 MLY from Earth.

The Virgo Cluster consists of three sub-clumps, centered on the giant elliptical galaxy M87, another on M49 and one on M86, the dominant elliptical in this image.

The Milky Way and its Local Group in turn form one of several strands of the Virgo supercluster. Markarian is credited with recognizing that the string of galaxies imaged here (and beyond) share a common motion through space.

Light that made this image left the galaxies about the time of the Chicxclub Impact on the Yucatan coast that led to the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs and set mammalian evolution on its course to produce , among others, amateur astronomers.
